1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

This document defines the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) testing procedures to be used by CGI and participants, pre-New Entrant Testing, to confirm communication lines have been successfully installed and data files can be exchanged.

0.1 Scope

This document defines the procedures to be followed by:

    • CGI

    • New Entrant High Grade Participants

The scheduling of FTP tests, with participants, will be published by CGI in a separate document. Participants will be expected to have procedures for use internally – the procedures outlined in this document only cover the FTP interaction between participants and CGI.

0.1 Summary

Whenever a High Grade New Participant joins the BSC Central Services it is necessary to connect the Participant to the BSC Central Services computing systems. To ensure file transfers between participant and CGI can take place, a series of FTP tests require performing.

1 Responsibilities

The following paragraphs highlight the individual responsibilities of each party to ensure New Entrants testing can commence.

1.1 Boundaries of responsibility for High Grade Service

1.1.1 CGI

CGI will be responsible for:

Pre-FTP Test:

    • Procuring communication lines as instructed by ELEXON. CGI will sub-contract Vodafone to perform the physical installation of the communication lines and will manage Vodafone accordingly.

    • Communicating, to participant IP addresses and FTP account details of the BSC Central services.

FTP Testing:

      • Overall management of the process.

      • Specifying the tests between participant and the BSC central services.

      • Creating test files for transmission to and from participant systems.

      • Executing the tests at CGI end.

      • Validating data files received from participants.

      • Collation of testing success / failures provided by CGI and the participant to provide an overall test status.

      • Supporting queries from the participants and resolving issues on the content of the files exchanged and the progress of the test.

1.1.2 High Grade Participant

The communications service supplied by BSC Central Services will terminate at a router at a participant’s site. The router will be supplied and installed as part of the installation of the private line.

The participant is responsible:

Pre-FTP Test

      • For the connection of the router to the participant’s Local Area Network (via a firewall if this is required by the participant), i.e. the boundary is the port on the LAN side of the router.

FTP Testing:

      • The participant will be responsible for performing a test FTP transfer to the BSC central servers.

      • Generating files where required and transferring files back to BSC central servers.

      • Resolving issues that are raised during testing, within their own systems.

1.2 Testing approach

A new entrants testing provides a service that permits participants to demonstrate that they can communicate with BSC Central Services. The FTP tests will demonstrate that participants can correctly send, receive files. Before testing commences, CGI to ping the LAN IP address of the Vodafone CE router and participant to confirm connectivity to BSC FTP server to establish there is an active communications line.

    1. Participant connects to the BSC FTP server (IP and log in details to be communicated) and performs the following tasks:

    • FTP connect to BSC Central server

    • cd temp

    • FTP “put” file in to temp

    • Rename file to ../inbox

    1. CGI to verify and compare the file size uploaded in the inbox for any discrepancies.

    2. CGI to upload file on the BSC FTP server

    • FTP connect to BSC Central server

    • cd temp

    • FTP “put” file in to temp

    • Rename file to ../outbox

    1. Participant connects to the BSC FTP server.

    • FTP connect to BSC Central server

    • cd outbox

    • FTP “get” file from outbox

    • Delete file from outbox

    1. Participant to verify and compare the downloaded file size.
